Hertfordshire Wildlife Trust

2024

A project supported by the Foundation to reintroduce water voles to the River Ver in 2021 has been a huge success. The most recent survey, May 2024, identified a water vole population occupying approximately 8km of the main river and adjoining watercourses. A 430% increase in 3.5 years. To add to the hope for a continued colonisation, voles have been making their way upstream and 1.7km away from the nearest known core population.  Dedicated volunteers have been instrumental to this success.

For the first time in 40 years locals can see and hear the water voles with added benefits for increasing biodiversity.

The Foundation’s grant went towards funding a midweek residential, featuring practical workshops and career guidance, affording young people access to new skills and inspiring an enduring love for learning.

Feedback:

We anticipate this project to have long lasting impact. The young people feel more secure and confident in their employment prospects. They are motivated to continue their education and have learnt functional skills, and have increased resilience and self confidence.”
